Asthma: An Overview & Home Remedies

Asthma also known as Bronchial asthma affects millions of people around the world, India solely registers more than 10 million (1 crore) cases of Asthma every year in India. According to the report of the world health organization, Asthma affected 26.2 crore people and become a cause of death for 4.61 lakh people globally. People more often take Asthma for granted, but as per the report of WHO it is very clear that Asthma is one of the severe diseases that can lead us to death. This disease mostly affects children below the age of eighteen. 


What is Asthma?

Asthma is a lung disease that affects the air pipe and narrows the way of air we inhale into our body. Asthma occurs through inflammation, swelling, and when the lung produces extra mucus. Asthma creates difficulty in breathing. People affected by Asthma experience the symptoms mentioned below-

  • Shortness in breathing
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Inflammation and pain in the chest
  • Wheezing (Sound of a whistle come during the time of breathing)
  • Frequent and fast breathing 
  • Breathing from mouth 
  • Coughing
  • Dry coughing at nights
  • Respiratory infections
  • Allergy
  • Retraction (While inhaling the breath skin between rib and neck seems like sinks in)




What are the causes of Asthma?

Causes of Asthma-

  • Family history (More likely parents or siblings having or had Asthma ever in life)
  • Allergy (People who have allergies like eczema, and hay fever)
  • Pollution and bad environmental conditions
  • Obesity or overweight
  • Chemical and dust exposure
  • Low birth weight 
  • Infection or viral infections in the respiratory system 
  • Smoking and tobacco consuming




Asthma can lead us to-

  • Fatigue 
  • Regular chest pain
  • Permanent shortness of breathing
  • Failure of respiratory 
  • Pneumonia 
  • Extra mucus that may reduce bronchi passage 


Dos and Don’ts: when you have Asthma

  • Stop smoking
  • Stop eating tree nuts and peanuts 
  • Don’t drink cow’s milk
  • Do not eat eggs, shellfish, wheat, and soya.
  • Do not eat over food
  • Ignore spicy food
  • Avoid drinking alcohol
  • Exercise daily 
  • Anulom-vilom may help
  • Eat a fixed diet 
  • Maintain a good sleeping routine




Home remedies for Asthma-

Follow any of the remedies mentioned below to cure your asthma-

First home remedy for asthma-

Ingredients- Dry root of Liquorice (yashtimadhu)one glass of water, a Half spoon of Ghee

Step 1- Crush the dry root of liquorice and powder it. 

Step 2- Mix the powder into the water properly and boil it for 4-5 minutes.

Step 3- Strain the water in the glass and mix the half spoon of ghee into it. 

Instruction- Drink a glass of this mixture for three days, take one sip in a break of 3 minutes till the glass becomes empty. (You will feel like puking and that’s normal to feel while having this concoction) (Note: People with high blood pressure and pregnant ladies are advised to not take this drink)


Second-home remedy for asthma-

Ingredients- 6 Cloves, 1 cup of water, and 1 spoon of honey

Step 1- Boil the water with cloves till the water remains ½ of its actual quantity.

Step 2- Strain the boiled mixture and mix one spoon of honey gently.

Instruction- Take 1 spoon of the mixture 3 times a day.


Third home remedy for asthma-

Ingredients- 1 spoon of carrom seed (Ajwain), 2 cups of water.

Instruction- Boil the water with carrom seed (Ajwain) and inhale the steam of it to cure asthma.


Fourth home remedy for asthma-

Ingredients- 2-3 Cloves, ¼ cup of milk.

Instruction- Boil the milk with cloves and cool it after boiling, and drink regularly.


Fifth home remedy for asthma- 

Ingredients- Mustard oil and camphor

Instruction- Boil mustard oil with camphor and heat it comfortably and massage your upper back and chest daily.


Sixth home remedy for asthma-

Ingredients- ½ glass of pomegranate juice, ½ cup of ginger juice, and 1 spoon of honey.

Instruction- Mix all the ingredients and take 1 spoon 3 times a day.
