What is Thyroid and Thyroid disorder?

The thyroid is one of our glands in the body, that is found around the throat area and directly below Adam’s apple. The thyroid plays a major role in the production of metabolism and the growth of the human body. The thyroid releases the hormone “Triiodothyronine” (T3) and “Thyroxine” (T4), and these hormones go through the blood to the cells and the entire part of the body. The good functioning of the thyroid glands is very important for us because it regulates the metabolism of our bodies. (Metabolism converts eaten food and drinks into energy) Misfunctioning of thyroid glands disturbs the balance of our body.

When the thyroid gland produces a large amount of hormones or less amount of hormones in the body, that creates severe problems in the body, and this misfunctioning of the thyroid gland is known as a thyroid disorder or thyroid disease.

There are majorly two types of thyroid disorder-

  1. Hyperthyroidism: When our thyroid gland produces too many hormones in the body, this misfunction of the thyroid is called hyperthyroidism. Complications, causes, and cures for this thyroid disorder are mentioned below in another section.

  1. Hypothyroidism: When the thyroid gland releases fewer hormones in the blood, through which disbalance in the body occurs, this misfunction of the thyroid glands is known as hypothyroidism. Complication, causes, and cure of this thyroid disorder will be different than hyperthyroidism.
